SUMMARY:Institute Symposium - A Hundred Years of Latency
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nInstitute Sypmposium \n\n\n\nWednesday February 25th\, 1pm to 2pm 2026Rona Knight: A Hundred Years of Latency: From Freudian Psychosexual Theory toDynamic Systems Nonlinear Development In Middle ChildhoodRona Knight’s 2014 article\, “A Hundred Years of Latency” reviews a century ofpsychoanalytic thought on the latency period of middle childhood. It contrasts thetraditional\, linear view of latency as a passive\, desexualized “waiting period”; with anewer\, nonlinear\, dynamic systems model where middle childhood is an active and fluidstage of development influenced by biology\, environment\, and psychologAbstractA focus on the latency phase is used to illustrate how theory and developmentalresearch have influenced our psychoanalytic views of development over the pasthundred years. Beginning with Freud’s psychosexual theory and his conception oflatency\, an historical overview of the major psychoanalytic contributions bearing on thisdevelopmental period over the past century is presented. Recent longitudinal researchin latency supports a nonlinear dynamic systems approach to development. Thisapproach obliges us to reconsider our linear theories and how we think about and workwith our patients. \n\n\n\nEducational Objectives:1. Describe Sigmund Freud’s original conceptualization of the latency phase and its place in psychosexual development.2. Summarize key psychoanalytic contributions that have shaped understanding of the latency period over the past century.3. Explain how recent longitudinal research supports a nonlinear dynamic systems perspective and its implications for clinical practice. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nThe presenter has  no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to report. \n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants are asked to be aware of the need for privacy and confidentiality throughout the program. SUMMARY:Emptiness and Transformation in Psychoanalysis
DESCRIPTION:co-sponsored by: Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute \n\n\n\nEmptiness and Transformation in Psychoanalysis\n\n\n\nPresenter: Eric JiangTuesday\, February 24\, 2026\, at 7:00 – 9:00 PM Central timeBy Zoom Only  \n\n\n\nEric Jiang \n\n\n\nCertified Clinical supervisor in Chinese PsychologyPsychoanalyst\, graduated from Chicago Psychoanalytic InstituteThe founder of Si Chuan He Guguang Clinical Psychology Institute \n\n\n\nDescription:  \n\n\n\nIn traditional Chinese religious and philosophical traditions\, including Buddhism\, Daoism\, and Confucianism\, there are profound elaborations on emptiness (śūnyatā) and enlightenment\, as well as wisdom. Within emptiness\, enlightenment occurs\, and enlightenment\, in turn\, deepens the understanding of emptiness. Similarly\, in Judaism\, there are also descriptions of void or emptiness. In psychoanalysis\, Freud’s concepts of the mirror\, free association\, and evenly floating attention\, as well as Bion’s later notion of “No memory\, No desire\,” all contain ideas resonant with emptiness. This lecture aims to explore the relationship between emptiness and transformation in the clinical practice of psychoanalysis. \n\n\n\nApproximate breakdown of time: \n\n\n\nFirst Hour: presentationSecond Hour: discussion with audience \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives \n\n\n\nAfter attending this session\, participants should be able to: \n\n\n\n\nDescribe one way one of these religions (Buddhism\, Daoism\, Confucianism for Judaism) define emptiness.\n\n\n\nDescribe how one of Freud’s concepts ( mirroring\, free association or evenly floating attention) or Bion’s concept of “No memory No desire” contain ideas resonant with emptiness.\n\n\n\nDescribe how emptiness and transformation can be seen in the clinical practice of psychoanalysis.\n\n\n\n\nContinuing Education Credits are offered exclusively to Society members in all membership categories and those intending to join. \n\n\n\nThe presenter\, Eric Jiang\, and the organizer\, Lisa Karaitis\, PsyD\, have no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to report. \n\n\n\nParticipants are asked to be aware of the need for privacy and confidentiality throughout the program. \n\n\n\nACCME Accreditation Statement: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA) and the Chicago Psychoanalytic Society. He was editor of THE ANNUAL OF PSYCHOANALYSIS andserved as the Director of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis from 1998 until 2004.He had been Chair of the Committee on Ethics of the International Psycho-AnalyticalAssociation and received its Award for Extremely Meritorious Service in 2005. (2001) Titration in the Treatment of the More TroubledPatient. Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association 49:891-908AbstractThis article defines and discusses a modification of technique recommended by theauthors in the psychoanalytic treatment of more troubled patients; a modification theycall titration. Titration is defined as a conscious decision by the analyst to increase ordecrease assistance (or gratification) gradually\, in order to facilitate the analytic \n\n\n\nprocess. The authors emphasize the complexity of decisions in treatment by focusingon the decision-making processes that titration requires. Guidelines and a case vignetteare presented. The authors conclude by considering some of the politics involved in theintroduction of technique modifications\, the salience of the titration concept\, anddirections for further exploration. \n\n\n\nEducational Objectives: \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nThe presenter has  no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to report. \n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants are asked to be aware of the need for privacy and confidentiality throughout the program. Michigan Avenue\, 7th Floor\, and Zoom \n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJonathan Lear was an important\, if somewhat background\, presence at CPI from the time of his arrivalin Chicago in 1996 to his death in 2025. He trained in psychoanalysis at the Western New England Institute forPsychoanalysis in the early 1990’s\, worked clinically from that time forward. He maintained anongoing commitment to thinking psychoanalytically about philosophical issues and to thinkingphilosophically about psychoanalytic matters. Of course his major intellectual home in Chicago wasthe Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. But he kept a close eye on our doings\, taught the Freud course with a series of highly sought after lectures in 2017\, gave presentations when we asked\, and most of all cared about our “flourishing” (his word\, founded in his appreciation for Aristotle). We thank him for the gift of his heart\, his mind\, and his time for our project of keeping psychoanalysis alive as a mode of thought\, amode of training\, and a part of the intellectual and cultural life of Chicago. \n\n\n\nWe are asking for donations to our Speaker Fund to advance scholarship through a yearly lecture on the Intersection of Psychoanalysis and Philosophy. \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO DONATE\n\n\n\nIntroduction: Wendy Selene\, Ph.D.\, LCSW\, Training and Supervising Analyst and Former Dean at CPIChristine Sterkel\,M.D. Training and Supervising Analyst\, CPI: Highlights and Appreciation forJonathan’s last book\, Imagining the End: Mourning and Ethical Life (2022)Frank Summers\, Ph.D. Training and Supervising Analyst\, CPI: “A Philosphically InformedPsychoanalysis: Some of Jonathan Lear’s Contributions to Psychoanalysis”John Riker\, Ph.D. Professor of Classics and Philosophy\, Colorado College: “Psychoanalysis and a NewHuman Ontology”Phil Lebovitz\, M.D. Training and Supervising Analyst \, CPI\, introduces:Al Margulies\, M.D. \, Training and Supervising Analyst\, Boston Psychoanalytic Institute: “The LastCourse: In Gratitude\, Remembering Jonathan Lear.” \n\n\n\nWine and cheese will be served afterwards \n\n\n\n2 CEU’s will be available for those who need it at the cost of $50. \n\n\n\nEducational Objectives:1. Describe key philosophical concepts in Jonathan Lear’s work that inform contemporary psychoanalytic theory and practice.2. Examine how interdisciplinary thinking can deepen clinicians’ understanding of mourning\, ethical life\, and human flourishing in treatment.3. Discuss applications of Lear’s ideas to clinical situations\, including how philosophical perspectives can enhance analytic listening\, ethical reflection\, and therapeutic decision-making. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nThe presenter has  no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to report. \n\n\n\n\n\nACCME Accreditation Statement This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of American Psychoanalytic Association and Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute. SUMMARY:Institute Symposium - The Play of Mourning
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nInstitute Sypmposium \n\n\n\nWednesday December 10th 1pm to 2pm CT 2025 \n\n\n\nSteven H. Cooper The Play of Mourning   \n\n\n\nCooper\, S. H. (2023) The Play of Mourning. Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association 71:61-82 \n\n\n\n Dr.Cooper has advanced  our understanding of play in relation to particular forms of transference-countertransference responsiveness that emerge in analytic work. He defines playing as a form of responsiveness that involves a shift from more formal interpretation about defense\, self-states\, unconscious fantasy or transference to one that employs humor or irony regarding the content of fantasy\, idiomatic language used to express affect or ideas\, or the analyst’s more personally revealing reaction to the patient’s recruitment of him as an internal object. \n\n\n\n Hisfocus in this talk will be on highlighting a few of the particular qualities of play that activate the power of the analytic situation to facilitate mourning of depriving or frustrating objects. Dr. Cooper is not speaking about losing objects who have died or left the patient. Rather\, his focus is on attachment to frustrating or unavailable objects whom patients cling to through conscious and unconscious fantasy. Through newly discovered forms of play\, these processes are occurring now in real time between patient and analyst and less through frozen memorialization of what never was. \n\n\n\nSteven Cooper\, Ph.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School\, Cambridge Health Alliance. He served as Joint Editor-in-Chief of Psychoanalytic Dialogues from 2007-2012 and is now Joint Chief Editor Emeritus. SUMMARY:Institute Symposium - The Innate Capacity for Representing Subjective Experience
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nInstitute Symposium \n\n\n\nWednesday November 5th\, 2025 1pm to 2pm CT \n\n\n\nAnne Erreich : The Innate Capacity for Representing Subjective Experience: TheInfant’s Mind is Neither Primitive nor Prerepresentational. \n\n\n\nThe author cites the prominence of theories that locate serious adult psychopathology inthe preverbal infant’s inability to formulate or represent traumatic experience. The workof two such authors\, H. Levine and D. B. Stern\, is briefly considered. The frame ofreference for this investigation is that clinical and academic research findings are highlyrelevant to psychoanalytic theorizing. It is argued that when such findings areconsidered\, a view of the infant with “primordial and unrepresented” states of mind haslittle evidence to support it. In fact\, research findings summarized herein point to anopposite view: that of the “competent infant\,” one with highly accurate perceptualdiscrimination capacities and an innate ability to register and represent subjective \n\n\n\nexperience in both procedural and declarative memory\, even prenatally. Given theinfant’s competencies\, it seems implausible to hold that representational deficits are atthe heart of serious adult psychopathology\, which is instead seen to be the result ofdefensive maneuvers against unknowable and unspeakable truth rather than theabsence of a preverbal representational capacity. Current research findings seem topose a significant challenge for psychoanalytic theories that espouse “primitive mentalstates”; “unrepresented\,” “unformulated\,” or “unsymbolized” experience; or“nonconscious” states. \n\n\n\nEducational Objectives:  \n\n\n\n\nApply the concept of early representational functioning to therapeutic work with parents\, infants\, or children \n\n\n\nExamine theoretical evidence that challenges the view of the infant mind as primitive or prerepresentational.\n\n\n\nDiscuss the clinical implications of recognizing representational capacities in early infancy \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nThe presenter has  no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to report. \n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants are asked to be aware of the need for privacy and confidentiality throughout the program. SUMMARY:RFP-C Talk: Dr. Timothy Rice
DESCRIPTION:Click Here to Register\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the Authors of RFP-C: \n\n\n\nDr. Leon Hoffman is a child\, adolescent\, and adult psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in practice in New York\, NY.  He is Co-Director of the Pacella Research Center of the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute\, and the creator and original author of the RFP-C approach.  \n\n\n\nDr. Timothy Rice is a child\, adolescent\, and adult psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in practice in New York\, NY.  He is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons\, where he is Co-Chair of the Child Division at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. \n\n\n\nObjectives: This talk provides an introduction to the theory\, evidence\, and practice of Regulation Focused Psychotherapy for Children (RFP-C). RFP-C is a manualized\, short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy for children with externalizing problems. It is designed to help children and their families understand the meaning of disruptive behavior and to increase effective emotion regulation. \n\n\n\nMethods: Current leaders of the RFP-C approach will explain the theoretical and empirical underpinnings of RFP-C and focus on its clinical technique.  Clinical work with racial and ethnic minority and underserved children is emphasized. The introduction to the clinical technique describes the real-life psychotherapy. An invitation to the audience to consider their own case material and clinical challenges in work with children with disruptive behaviors will conclude the presentation. Results RFP-C is among the several short-term psychodynamic psychotherapies with an evidence basis. Clinical vignettes of techniques with both children and their caregivers can illustrate the practical aspects of its use. The audience’s discussion can be understood within  an RFP-C model\, which can provide helpful suggestions for clinical direction. \n\n\n\nConclusions: Effective assessment and therapeutic techniques for use with children who present with disruptive and defiant behavior\, irritability\, and emotional dysregulation is accessible and employable through the evidence-based short term psychodynamic psychotherapy RFP-C. \n\n\n\nBibliography: \n\n\n\nProut\, T. SUMMARY:Second Thoughts on "Second Chances: Freud and Shakespeare"

The phrase “second chance” appears 470 times on “PEP Web\,” from the 1920s up to the present day. Greenblatt and Phillips take us back further still\, 400 years ago\, to Shakespeare’s “Winter’s Tale\,” which they call a “template” for understanding second chances. They move on to Freud\, inviting us to wonder about Freud’s paradoxical observation that people resist the ‘second chance’ they are given in psychoanalysis\, though it is the aim of analysis. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:On getting the life you want: Psychoanalysis and American Pragmatism
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn this thought-provoking presentation\, acclaimed psychoanalyst and writer Adam Phillips explores the fundamental tension between Richard Rorty’s pragmatic philosophy—which suggests truth is what helps you get the life you want—and Freudian psychoanalysis\, which reveals how we often resist knowing what we truly desire. Phillips masterfully examines how these two influential frameworks approach the central question of human wanting: while Rorty’s pragmatism encourages us to pursue our conscious purposes and redescribe our lives to achieve our goals\, Freud’s psychoanalysis suggests we are fundamentally unconscious of our deepest desires and driven by forces beyond our awareness. Through this intellectual dialogue\, Phillips illuminates the complexities of modern secular life\, questioning whether we can ever truly know what we want and whether the pursuit of “the life we want” is liberating self-creation or potentially naive wishful thinking\, ultimately suggesting that both psychoanalysis and pragmatism offer valuable contributions to understanding human desire and the possibility of meaningful choice and change through psychoanalytic treatment. \n\n\n\nInstructor Bio: \n\n\n\nLearning objectives:After attending this presentation\, participants will be able to:1. Describe key concepts of psychoanalysis and American Pragmatism\, and explain how each approach contributes to understanding and pursuing “the good life.”2. Analyze how psychoanalysis and American Pragmatism conceptualize and respond to the problem of human desire and motivation.3. Apply principles of American Pragmatism to enhance clinical thinking and technique within psychoanalytic practice. \n\n\n\n\n\nACCME Accreditation StatementThis activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of American Psychoanalytic Association and Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute. In this talk\, Dr. Mark Solms will argue that this is incorrect: consciousness arises from the primitive brainstem. Moreover\, he will argue that consciousness is not fundamentally perceptual and cognitive but rather fundamentally affective and emotional. He will present clinical neurological and experimental evidence to support these arguments\, which have their historical origins in two ideas of Freuds\, namely\, that perception and cognition are largely unconscious and that affective feelings are intrinsically conscious. \n\n\n\nLearning objectives:1. Describe the brain structures that generate conscious versus unconscious mental states.2. Explain the functional relationship between conscious and unconscious mental states.3. Implement revised therapeutic techniques for making unconscious strategies conscious\, leading to less automatised decision-making. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nACCME Accreditation StatementThis activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of American Psychoanalytic Association and Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute. SUMMARY:Dr. David Hicks: “Then\, one day…” How to Process Grief Through Story
DESCRIPTION:Dr. David Hicks:“Then\, one day…” How to Process Grief Through Story July 13\, 2024 Live at The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute9:30 am – 10:30 am Light Breakfast & Introductions10:30 am – 11:30 am Workshop11:30 am – 12:30 pmQ&APresented by Dr. David Hicks2 CE Credits \n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n One of the most effective ways of processing grief is to express one’s experience as a story. Following a tried-and-true formula (“Once upon a time . . . . Then\, one day . . .”)\, participants will learn how to help grieving members of their community to identify\, begin\, and structure an autobiographical story (fiction or non-fiction) about a loss they have suffered. Participants will finish the workshop with a three-sentence (for children) or three-paragraph (for adults) beginning of a new essay\, story\, novel\, memoir\, or children’s story based on the death of a loved one\, with optional follow-up advice (for staff) on how to run such a workshop in the future. \n\n\n\nInstructor Bio: David Hicks\, PhD is a five-time “Professor of the Year” and Director of Creative Writing at the nationally ranked Wilkes University MFA graduate program. He is the author of two novels–WHITE PLAINS (Bower House Books) and THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO DANNY (forthcoming\, Vine Leaves Press)—and an autobiographical children’s book\, THE MAGIC TICKET (Fulcrum Books\, 2024)\, all based on the story structure that is the focus of this workshop. (THE MAGIC TICKET is based on David’s experience as a child\, when he lost his little sister and found a sanctuary for his grief in his local public library.) An experienced developmental editor\, David has helped over sixty writers to be published for the first time. \n\n\n\nLearning objectives:After attending this presentation\, participants will be able to:1. Write works of fiction or nonfiction about a loss they have suffered as a way to process grief\, expressing the experience as a story using the “Once upon a time . . . . Then\, one day . . .” formula.2. Apply what they have learned in order to run their own such workshop. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nCE StatementThis program is sponsored by the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute. Participants are asked to be aware of the need for privacy and confidentiality throughout the program. SUMMARY:Institute Symposium - Castrated Analyst: The Analytic Fourth
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nThe author takes the Freudian concept of Castrated and expounds the meaning applied to the way the analyst is experienced by the analysand when the analyst has an observed diversity. The analytic fourth is further clarified to understand the depth of the complexity of the analysand bringing forth or resistance to allow for the diversity to be brought into the transference. In use of the author’s own blindness clinical examples are used to deepen the understanding of the complexity this holds within the analytic space.  \n\n\n\nWhat is a castrated analyst? What does the term “castrated” mean? In this paper\, Bobbie Davis will explain the castrated analyst and what she has identified as the analytic fourth in her  work as a blind psychoanalytic candidate\, as well as describe the difference in the use of the analyst with barriers that may be in place due to the analytic fourth present in the transference. Working with an understanding of the significance of the analytical fourth in the differentiation from being only a component of diversity\, the castrated analyst\, or in the transference of the castrated other\, prevents the deepening of the transference if this is not identified and worked through in the analysis \n\n\n\nEducational Objectives: \n\n\n\n1. Understand what the analytic 4th is and the role it plays in the analysis. \n\n\n\n2. Understand the significance of the analytical fourth in the differentiation from being only a component of diversity\, the castrated analyst\, or in the transference of the castrated other\, and how this prevents the deepening of the transference if this is not identified and worked through in the analysis.  \n\n\n\nThe presenter\, Bobbie Davis\, PhD\, has  no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to report. \n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants are asked to be aware of the need for privacy and confidentiality throughout the program. This includes the claim that Freud’s intended meanings have been grossly distorted. Strachey is said to have medicalized psychoanalysis by imposing a spurious scientific consistency on Freud’s sprawling works\, while also concocting an awkward pretentious vocabulary. Along with these poor translations\, there have been 40 unpublished papers by Freud that the learners will have never seen before. This has left gaps in the learner’s understanding of Freud as a humanist that have never before been taught to them or available until now.  \n\n\n\nLearning objectives:1.Analyze and discuss pros and cons of James Strachey’s technical vocabulary in Freud translation.2.Summarize the contents and implications of some previously unpublished works by Freud. \n\n\n\nLearners’ will increase their awareness of the challenges Professor Solms faced when translating Freud. Since the practice of psychoanalysis is grounded fundamentally in Freud’s theories\, a better understanding of these theories will have multiple implications for how participants practice psychoanalysis clinically. SUMMARY:Day 1: Dr. Mark Solms - The Revision of Freud's Theory of the Drives
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mark Solms:The Revision of Freud’s Theory of the Drives May 17\, 2024 Live at The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Lunch Provided1:00 pm – 4:00 pm The Revision of Freud’s Theory of the DrivesPresented by Dr. Mark Solms3 CME/CE Credits \n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Students\, Faculty and Treatment Center Staff will receive discount information via email. \n\n\n\n Contemporary psychoanalysts have lost confidence in Freudian drive theory but have not replaced it with an alternative drive theory. This is problematic for many reasons\, not least of them being the fact that ‘drive’ was Freud’s connecting link between the body and the mind. Psychoanalysis without drive theory is a disembodied discipline. Most psychoanalysts either have abandoned the use of drive theory or they are still using Freudian drive theory in their clinical work\, because they are unfamiliar with subsequent developments in the field of neurobiology. This presents a gap in the learners ability to effectively use drive theory in their practice. \n\n\n\nLearning objectives:1.Evaluate the fundamental role that homeostasis plays in biology and psychology. 2.Consider the seven major emotional drives of the human being. \n\n\n\nAfter attending this presentation\, participants will increase their knowledge of new interpretations of Freudian drive theory\, increase their understanding of the 7 major emotional drives of the human being. They will develop new strategies to use this information in the treatment of their patients.
