SUMMARY:Emptiness and Transformation in Psychoanalysis
DESCRIPTION:co-sponsored by: Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute \n\n\n\nEmptiness and Transformation in Psychoanalysis\n\n\n\nPresenter: Eric JiangTuesday\, February 24\, 2026\, at 7:00 – 9:00 PM Central timeBy Zoom Only  \n\n\n\nEric Jiang \n\n\n\nCertified Clinical supervisor in Chinese PsychologyPsychoanalyst\, graduated from Chicago Psychoanalytic InstituteThe founder of Si Chuan He Guguang Clinical Psychology Institute \n\n\n\nDescription:  \n\n\n\nIn traditional Chinese religious and philosophical traditions\, including Buddhism\, Daoism\, and Confucianism\, there are profound elaborations on emptiness (śūnyatā) and enlightenment\, as well as wisdom. Within emptiness\, enlightenment occurs\, and enlightenment\, in turn\, deepens the understanding of emptiness. Similarly\, in Judaism\, there are also descriptions of void or emptiness. In psychoanalysis\, Freud’s concepts of the mirror\, free association\, and evenly floating attention\, as well as Bion’s later notion of “No memory\, No desire\,” all contain ideas resonant with emptiness. This lecture aims to explore the relationship between emptiness and transformation in the clinical practice of psychoanalysis. \n\n\n\nApproximate breakdown of time: \n\n\n\nFirst Hour: presentationSecond Hour: discussion with audience \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives \n\n\n\nAfter attending this session\, participants should be able to: \n\n\n\n\nDescribe one way one of these religions (Buddhism\, Daoism\, Confucianism for Judaism) define emptiness.\n\n\n\nDescribe how one of Freud’s concepts ( mirroring\, free association or evenly floating attention) or Bion’s concept of “No memory No desire” contain ideas resonant with emptiness.\n\n\n\nDescribe how emptiness and transformation can be seen in the clinical practice of psychoanalysis.\n\n\n\n\nContinuing Education Credits are offered exclusively to Society members in all membership categories and those intending to join. \n\n\n\nThe presenter\, Eric Jiang\, and the organizer\, Lisa Karaitis\, PsyD\, have no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to report. \n\n\n\nParticipants are asked to be aware of the need for privacy and confidentiality throughout the program. \n\n\n\nACCME Accreditation Statement: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA) and the Chicago Psychoanalytic Society. SUMMARY:Institute Symposium - A Hundred Years of Latency
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nInstitute Sypmposium \n\n\n\nWednesday February 25th\, 1pm to 2pm 2026Rona Knight: A Hundred Years of Latency: From Freudian Psychosexual Theory toDynamic Systems Nonlinear Development In Middle ChildhoodRona Knight’s 2014 article\, “A Hundred Years of Latency” reviews a century ofpsychoanalytic thought on the latency period of middle childhood. It contrasts thetraditional\, linear view of latency as a passive\, desexualized “waiting period”; with anewer\, nonlinear\, dynamic systems model where middle childhood is an active and fluidstage of development influenced by biology\, environment\, and psychologAbstractA focus on the latency phase is used to illustrate how theory and developmentalresearch have influenced our psychoanalytic views of development over the pasthundred years. Beginning with Freud’s psychosexual theory and his conception oflatency\, an historical overview of the major psychoanalytic contributions bearing on thisdevelopmental period over the past century is presented. Recent longitudinal researchin latency supports a nonlinear dynamic systems approach to development. Thisapproach obliges us to reconsider our linear theories and how we think about and workwith our patients. \n\n\n\nEducational Objectives:1. Describe Sigmund Freud’s original conceptualization of the latency phase and its place in psychosexual development.2. Summarize key psychoanalytic contributions that have shaped understanding of the latency period over the past century.3. SUMMARY:Institute Symposium - The Analysts Desire and the Problem of Narcissistic Resistances
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nInstitute Sypmposium \n\n\n\nWednesday March 25th 1pm to 2pm CT 2026Mitchell Wilson : The Analysts Desire and the Problem of Narcissistic ResistancesAbstractThe ways in which the analyst’s desire for particular experiences with patients isinevitable and often leads to narcissistically based resistances are considered. Fivepropositions are examined: (1) that the analyst cannot help but have desires and want \n\n\n\nthem recognized by the analysand; (2) that these desires frequently underwrite theanalyst’s theoretical beliefs and technical interventions; (3) that narcissistic desires andtheir influence are ubiquitous among practicing analysts; (4) that the patient is often onthe lookout for the analyst’s various agendas; and (5) that the patient often hopes theanalyst will put his or her desire aside and listen so the patient can further his or herown interests. Lacan’s concept of the “dual relation” is central to this discussion. Theneo-Kleinian position on narcissistic resistances is explored\, as is the idea of the“analytic third” as a potential solution to the problem they pose. An extended casedescription illustrates the main points. \n\n\n\nEducational Objectives: \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nThe presenter has  no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to report. \n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants are asked to be aware of the need for privacy and confidentiality throughout the program. Moving beyond a “sign-based” interpretation\, we will examine the Jungian conceptualization of the symbol as the best possible expression for a yet-unknown psychic reality. We will explore two primary methodological pillars: amplification\, the process of expanding a symbol’s meaning through mythic and cultural parallels\, and circumambulation\, the iterative process of orbiting a central psychic image to allow its inherent meaning to unfold. The presentation will introduce and demonstrate the usefulness of the Archive for Research in Archetypal Symbolism (ARAS) in clinical practice. \n\n\n\nApproximate breakdown of time: \n\n\n\nFirst Hour: presentationSecond Hour: discussion with audience \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives \n\n\n\nAfter attending this session\, participants should be able to: \n\n\n\n\nApply the techniques of amplification and circumambulation to clinical material to deepen the patient’s relationship with unconscious imagery.\n\n\n\nDescribe how Archive for Research in Archetypal Symbolism  (ARAS) can be used as a resource in the amplification of symbols.\n\n\n\nAnalyze how symbolic material serves as a bridge between somatic experience and psychological insight.\n\n\n\n\nContinuing Education Credits are offered exclusively to Society members in all membership categories and those intending to join. \n\n\n\nThe presenter and organizer have no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to report. SUMMARY:Institute Symposium - Herbert Cibul MD & Barrie Richmond MD Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nInstitute Sypmposium \n\n\n\nWednesday April 29th\, 2026 1pm to 230pm CT \n\n\n\nHerbert Cibul MD and Barrie Richmond MD Memorial Lecture Working with Children and Parents.  \n\n\n\nIn this special additional symposium\, Molly Witten\, PhD and Marshall Kordon\, PsyD will be discussing remembering our former colleagues by presenting and discussing two of their important papers. \n\n\n\nBarrie Richmond MDCountertransference problems in dealing with severely disturbed parents: Their potential value for understanding the patient. \n\n\n\nRichmond\, M. B. (1992). Countertransference problems in dealing with severely disturbed parents: Their potential value for understanding the patient. Residential Treatment for Children & Youth\, 9(4)\, 61–80. https://doi.org/10.1300/J007v09n04_0 \n\n\n\nAbstractBased on 3 illustrative composite clinical cases\, the use of the analyst’s countertransference is discussed as an organizer to formulate the diagnostic and therapeutic process in dealing with severely disturbed (psychotic) patients and their families. Three themes are stressed: the influence of dependency conflicts\, competitive parental envy\, and the process of identification with the aggressor. Counteridentification responses to projective identification are emphasized in stressing the significant role that the psychoanalyst’s countertransference may play in clarifying the therapeutic process with very disturbed children\, adolescents\, and their parents. Psychoanalytic Psychology\, 14(3)\, 383–407. https://doi.org/10.1037/h0079732 \n\n\n\nAbstractDescribes parental affect dyskinesia\, which may lead to a pathological affect exchange pattern between mother and child\, ultimately disrupting the child’s experience of self\, including feelings\, thoughts\, wishes\, perceptions\, and tension states. Reparation occurs in the analytic treatment experience where the disrupted affect experience of the child is reimplanted within the more functional sort of the analytic relationship with the analyst. The author presents the case of a 14-yr-old male to demonstrate the uniqueness and effectiveness of analytic treatment for a dysfunctional mother–child dyad. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEducational Objectives: \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nThe presenter has  no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to report. \n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants are asked to be aware of the need for privacy and confidentiality throughout the program. SUMMARY:FANON
DESCRIPTION:AND \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresent \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFANON\n\n\n\nThursday\, April 30th\, 2026 at 7PM Central timeAnnie May Swift Hall – Auditorium\, Northwestern University \n\n\n\n\n\nBorn in Martinique\, Frantz Fanon was a psychiatrist\, philosopher\, and revolutionary. Director Jean-Claude Barny’s new biopic Fanon (2024\, 133 min.\, French and Arabic with subtitles) takes us to 1950s Algeria under French colonial rule\, where Fanon spent formative years as chief medical officer of the Blida-Joinville Psychiatric Hospital. Confronting entrenched racism and resistance to his innovative methods\, Fanon pushes to offer more humane treatment to his Algerian patients and begins to forge the political thinking that would shape his landmark writings on how colonialism flourishes by dehumanizing the oppressed. Filled with mounting tension and moral dilemmas\, the film follows Fanon as he begins to align himself with the Algerian independence movement and the National Liberation Front (FLN). \n\n\n\nThe Pritzker Pucker Studio Lab is proud to collaborate with the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute to host this special screening of Fanon\, which is currently not in distribution in the U.S.   \n\n\n\nFollowed by a conversation with psychoanalyst and Dean of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute\, Ramya B. Iyer\, LCSW and Northwestern University’s Michael Anthony Turcios\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor in Screen Cultures in the Department of Radio/Television/Film. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:Institute Symposium - Goodness of Fit: A Relational Approach to Field Instruction
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Institute Symposium \n\n\n\nWednesday May 27th\, 2026 1pm to 2pm CT \n\n\n\nGoodness of Fit: A Relational Approach to Field Instruction \n\n\n\nOrnstein\, Eric D.; Moses\, Helene \n\n\n\nJournal of Teaching in Social Work\, v30 n1 p101-114 2010 \n\n\n\nThis article uses the metaphor of “goodness of fit” to highlight the core features of a relational approach to field instruction (supervision). The distinctive attributes of thisapproach are contrasted with a traditional model of field instruction. The “teach or treat” dilemma is discussed to demonstrate the necessity for field instructors to maintain the delicate balance between a therapeutic and an educational stance in their work with students. The most compelling contribution of a relational approach to field instruction is when the fit between a field instructor and a student is problematic. At these difficult moments\, a relational approach offers alternatives that might not be possible in other approaches to supervision. Vignettes are offered throughout the article to illustrate these points. \n\n\n\n Eric Ornstein is an experienced therapist and researcher with over 15 published articles in the areas of community group treatment\, supervision\, relational theory and practice\, parallel processes\, regression and self disclosure and field work. Experienced Clinician and Social Work Educator. Eric is also a Leader of Social Work / Psychotherapy Consultation Group\, Individual and Group Supervision\, and Teacher.
