Frank Summers

PhD, ABPP

Frank Summers PhD, ABPP maintains a private practice in Chicago, Illinois. His practice consists of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy, consultation, supervision and study groups. Areas of specialization include depression, anxiety, identity confusion, relationship difficulties, problems of unfulfilled potential and the application of psychoanalytic therapy to severe emotional disturbance.

Dr. Summers has a particular theory of psychoanalysis elaborated in his writings and teachings which encompass more than 60 papers and book chapters and four books, the most recent of which, The Psychoanalytic Vision: The Experiencing Subject, Transcendence, and the Therapeutic Process, won the Gradiva Award for the best psychoanalytic book of 2013.

Affiliations:
A fellow of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Summers is Past President of the Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology. He is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University and a recipient of the 2018 Leadership Award of the SPPP, the Hans Strupp Award for Contributions to Psychoanalysis and the Distinguished Educator Award from the International Federation for Psychoanalytic Education as well as other teaching awards. An Associate Editor of Psychoanalytic Dialogues, Dr. Summers has conducted workshops, lectures, and taught courses across the United States and in various international settings.

Education:
Dr. Summers received his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Chicago, did his internship at Michael Reese Hospital, and completed psychoanalytic training at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute.
