The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute has established a collaboration with the Institute for Clinical Social Work (ICSW) called the Psychoanalytic Partnership. Together, the organizations are committed to expanding flexible pathways so that students in both institutes can create individualized educational programs that meet their professional goals. It is designed to take advantage of the strengths of each institute to the benefit of students. With the Partnership in place, students can access coursework at the other institution that helps them achieve their educational goals. Typically, Institute students can look to ICSW for license-eligible degrees and ICSW students can look to the Institute for coursework in psychoanalytic theory and child and adolescent psychotherapy.
A number of pathways for students have been identified:
- Students in analytic training at the Institute but who do not yet have a mental health credential can apply some Institute coursework to obtain a license-eligible degree at ICSW’s Master’s program in Clinical Counseling and Psychotherapy
- Institute students may take introductory coursework at ICSW as at-large students and later obtain academic credit if they elect to enroll in the ICSW Master’s program within 3 years
- Psychoanalytic Education Program students who want to pursue a PhD at ICSW may transfer Institute coursework to meet some of the applicable requirements
- Doctoral students at ICSW who want a specialization in child and adolescent psychotherapy can transfer credit from ICSW coursework and enroll as 2nd year students in the Institute’s child track in the Psychotherapy Program
- A student in either institution may enroll in a course at the other institution to meet their individual educational goals
The missions of the Institute and ICSW are aligned in the strong commitment to the values of a psychodynamic orientation. The Psychoanalytic Partnership opens new doors for interested students and contributes to the availability of high-quality mental health services in Chicago and beyond.
