Jonathan Lear (1948-2025) Our Appreciation
Saturday, January 10. 2:00-4:30 PM, at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute

8 S. Michigan Avenue, 7th Floor, and Zoom

Jonathan Lear was an important, if somewhat background, presence at CPI from the time of his arrival
in Chicago in 1996 to his death in 2025. He trained in psychoanalysis at the Western New England Institute for
Psychoanalysis in the early 1990’s, worked clinically from that time forward. He maintained an
ongoing commitment to thinking psychoanalytically about philosophical issues and to thinking
philosophically about psychoanalytic matters. Of course his major intellectual home in Chicago was
the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. But he kept a close eye on our doings,
taught the Freud course with a series of highly sought after lectures in 2017, gave presentations when we asked,
and most of all cared about our “flourishing” (his word, founded in his appreciation for Aristotle).

We thank him for the gift of his heart, his mind, and his time for our project of keeping psychoanalysis alive as a mode of thought, a
mode of training, and a part of the intellectual and cultural life of Chicago.

We are asking for donations to our Speaker Fund to advance scholarship through a yearly lecture on the Intersection of Psychoanalysis and Philosophy.
