Joseph Anderson, MA, ABD

Psychotherapy Fellow

I am a psychoanalytic and existential psychotherapist with six years of experience helping adults explore the deeper meanings of psychological distress, fostering lasting change and greater fulfillment in life.

Psychological distress and symptoms are meaningful and rooted in one’s distinctive experience and situation. I offer a space where you can speak freely in order to examine, explore, and better understand yourself and the ways in which things have gone awry. By working through your underlying issues and conflicts in a collaborative therapeutic relationship, new possibilities of relating to yourself and others might emerge. Psychotherapy aims for lasting change that decreases distress and increases one’s capacity to love, work, and live more fully.

I work well with adults who are open to exploration, able to tolerate uncertainty, and willing to look beyond ready-made answers and partial truths. I work from a psychoanalytic orientation, which pays particular attention to the expression of unconscious desires, thoughts, and impulses, and from an existential point of view, which focuses on helping one take responsibility for and express their freedom, even in the face of human limitations. Grounding my approach is a regard for each person in their uniqueness.

I have 6 years of experience as a psychotherapist working with a range of issues related to trauma, mood, anxiety, relationships, loss, personality, psychosis, and a sense of unease and dissatisfaction. I have worked in a variety of settings, including inpatient, forensic, student counseling, and outpatient and community clinics. I often work with medical professionals and have experience working with combat veterans. I am a PhD Candidate in Clinical Psychology at Duquesne University and completed an APA-accredited doctoral internship at SUNY Upstate Medical University.
