Panic-focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy was developed by psychoanalysts Barbara Milrod MD, Fredric Busch, MD, Arnold Cooper, MD and Theodore Shapiro, MD during the 1990’s at Weill Cornell Medical College Department of Psychiatry. This treatment has been found to be efficacious for treatment of Panic Disorder with or without agoraphobia, and its comorbidities. In randomized, controlled studies that have been replicated, it has been found to be equally as efficacious as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Educational Objectives:
1. This session strengthens clinical competence by teaching learners to identify the emotional and relational conflicts that
precipitate panic, conduct PFPP‑specific panic assessments, and apply targeted psychodynamic interventions that reduce panic vulnerability.
2. Learners will practice interpreting symptom meaning, recognizing defensive patterns, and using transference to modify maladaptive relational expectations, leading to improved diagnostic accuracy, more effective treatment planning, and measurable reductions in panic frequency and severity.
