Wilfred Bion wanted to describe something most theories of mind skip over: not what we think, but how raw experience becomes thinkable in the first place. He deliberately chose empty labels, alpha function and beta elements, to avoid importing assumptions from existing vocabulary. The result is an unusual theory, abstract on the page and immediately recognizable once you see it operating in a person.
At the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute, Bion’s model is valued because it explains a specific clinical puzzle: why some people can feel intensely and still be unable to think about what they feel.
What Are Beta Elements?
Beta elements are raw, unprocessed sensory and emotional impressions that have no meaning attached and cannot be used for thinking, dreaming, or remembering. They are experience in its undigested form.
Bion’s claim is that beta elements cannot be thought about at all. They can only be evacuated, got rid of, pushed out. This is why someone in a state dominated by beta elements does not reflect; they act, somatize, or project. The feeling is not available for consideration because it has not yet been made into anything considerable.
People describe them in physical terms when they try. A pressure. A dread with no object. A sensation of something building. The absence of words is not a vocabulary problem. There is genuinely nothing formed enough to name.
What Is Alpha Function?
Alpha function is the mental operation that converts beta elements into alpha elements, which are units of experience that can be stored, remembered, dreamed about, and thought with. It is the digestive process of the mind.
Bion was deliberate about saying he did not know what alpha function is. He named it as an unknown operation whose effects can be observed, rather than claiming to explain the mechanism. That restraint is characteristic and, given how much of psychoanalysis has overclaimed, worth respecting.
What alpha function produces is the raw material of a mental life. Without it, there is no dreaming, because dreaming requires elements that can be arranged. There is no useful memory, because experience was never converted into a storable form. And there is no capacity to learn from experience, which Bion considered the central achievement of a working mind.
Where Alpha Function Comes From
Nobody is born with it. Bion’s account is that alpha function is first performed by someone else and only later internalized, which is the point at which his theory of thinking meets his theory of relationships.
An infant overwhelmed by an unformed state expels it toward a caregiver. A caregiver in a receptive state, which Bion called reverie, takes it in, tolerates it without being flooded, works out what it might mean, and returns it in a form the infant can manage. Over thousands of repetitions the infant internalizes not just the relief but the operation itself. This pairing of a receiving mind and a raw state is what Bion described through container and contained, and alpha function is the work the container performs.
When that process fails repeatedly, the infant is left with the original terror amplified and still meaningless, a state Bion called nameless dread. The mechanism that transfers the raw material from one mind to the other is projective identification, which Bion reinterpreted as the earliest form of communication rather than only a defense.
What It Looks Like When Alpha Function Is Weak
Adults whose alpha function did not fully develop are often articulate about everything except their own emotional states. The deficit is specific rather than general.
Typical features include describing feelings only in physical terms or not at all, discharging emotion through action rather than reflection, recurring somatic symptoms with no medical explanation, and an absence of remembered dreams. Bion’s model predicts that last one directly: dreaming requires alpha elements, so a person producing few of them has little to dream with.
There is also a characteristic quality in conversation. The person reports events in detail with no emotional thread connecting them, or becomes flooded without being able to say by what. Both are versions of the same gap between having an experience and being able to hold it in mind.
Beta Screens and Why Some Speech Does Not Communicate
Bion described a further use of unprocessed material. When beta elements are evacuated in volume, they can form what he called a beta screen: a barrage that occupies the space between two people and prevents contact rather than creating it.
Clinically this is recognizable as speech that fills every available second and leaves the listener with nothing to hold. Afterward the clinician realizes they have learned almost nothing, despite an hour of continuous talk. The speech was not an attempt to communicate but an attempt to discharge, and the listener was being used as a receptacle rather than a mind.
Recognizing this changes the response. The useful move is not to work harder at following the content but to notice, eventually out loud, what is happening in the room.
How Psychoanalytic Treatment Builds It
Because alpha function is acquired by being performed for you, treatment supplies it before it can be internalized. The clinician receives what the patient cannot yet process, tolerates it without being overwhelmed or deflecting into intellectualization, and offers it back in a form that can be thought about.
Bion’s recommendation that the analyst listen without memory or desire belongs here. He meant it as a working discipline: approaching each session without the clutter of preconception, so there is room to receive whatever actually arrives. Over time, and only through repetition, the patient takes over the function. The change is structural rather than informational, which is why it cannot be hurried and why insight alone does not produce it. Our psychodynamic therapy for adults is built around that kind of slow, cumulative work, and the same principle shapes our work with children and adolescents, where the capacity is still forming.
Psychoanalytic Treatment in Chicago
The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute Treatment Center offers psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy grounded in the Kleinian and post-Kleinian traditions from which Bion’s work emerged. At our downtown Chicago office at 8 S Michigan Avenue, clinicians are trained to receive states a person cannot yet think about alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is alpha function in simple terms?
It is the mental operation that converts raw, unprocessed experience into material you can think about, remember, and dream with. Bion compared it to digestion: without it, experience cannot be used, only discharged.
What are beta elements?
Raw sensory and emotional impressions with no meaning attached. They cannot be thought about, only evacuated through action, physical symptoms, or projection into another person. People usually describe them physically, as pressure or formless dread.
Why did Bion use letters instead of descriptive names?
Deliberately, to avoid importing assumptions from existing psychoanalytic vocabulary. He also stated plainly that he did not know what alpha function is, naming it as an unknown operation whose effects can be observed rather than claiming to explain the mechanism.
What happens if alpha function does not develop?
Emotional states stay unprocessed, so a person can feel intensely without being able to reflect on it. Common signs are describing feelings only in bodily terms, acting rather than thinking under pressure, unexplained somatic symptoms, and little or no dream recall.
Can alpha function be developed in adulthood?
Yes. Because it is acquired by having another mind perform it for you, it can be built later through a sustained therapeutic relationship in which a clinician receives and processes what the person cannot yet hold. The change is structural and takes time.
Making Experience Usable
Bion’s contribution was to notice that thinking about your own feelings is not automatic. It is a capacity, it is given to you by someone else before it becomes yours, and when it was not given it can still be built later. If your emotional life tends to arrive as pressure rather than as anything you can examine, we invite you to reach out and book an appointment with our Treatment Center. Today, you are one step closer to growth and well-being.
